The 'world's largest aeroplane' built by Stratolaunch - with six engines, two fuselages and a wingspan broader than a football pitch - has taken off on its maiden voyage.

Taking to the skies over the Mojave Desert in California on Saturday, it was the first flight for the carbon-composite plane built by Stratolaunch Systems, started by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

The aircraft is designed to act as a flying launch pad for satellites.
